TomB used to be the resident metal guy here. I'm not sure if he's still
    around.

    tomb!!!
you recognize me with my flying mullet despite the new nick???

+ i consider myself to be very deathmetal/grindcore/blackmetal drummer
(whilst on the side i also dabble with
    hardcore-free-form-albeit-very-elitist-jazz).
seriously i do sometimes play hard and harsh - and usually within a
free-form context when doing so a la peter brötzman/ napalm death.
as for setup, tis my 'old faithfuls' throughout every mood/style.

sonor phonic plus strap drive (now - strap-on thats my thing)
7a - any brand as long as the sticks last
    remo clear ambassadors
    16x16 8-ply birch shell kick
no electronic dabbling nor muffling - wide open sound rules (allthough i
have a small impact patch on the batter)
springs as tight as they'll go
    pro-mark wooden beater
    5" off head
most of the time i play barefoot
