Bass is an instrument, right? So why shouldn't the players be considered musicians.

Instruments are meant to be played...
Anyone who plays has the unique pleasure of being called one...
Your question was almost as stupid as "Are people who work on cars really mechanics?"...
    Dumb question...
In every band, each instrument is a necessity to that band...
Each instrument brings something to music....
    and a side note...
Billy Sheenan would kick your @$$ if he heard you say that...

But hey...I'm not saying anything you don't already know...

If you turn a bass clef upside down it would make a great fishhook !

    Strange poll...
    I'm a guitarrist.
Is a guitar player a real musician?
It's not the instrument that makes the musician... it would be too easy...
Try listening Charlers Mingus (bass) or Dave Weckl (drums) and then ask yourself again if your question has a meaning...

    You're right!
Only a person that has got a very little knowledge in music can think that a drummer or a bassist are not musician!
Play "walking bass" (is called so the continuos improvvisation of the bass player in a jazz song) is one of the most difficult thing to play! I'm a guitarrist and I can play "JINGLE BELLS" at 300 bpm or Santana's solos easily but it's not a 1/100 difficult than playing a walking bass or a samba drum!
If you think you're a musician only 'cause you play more than two notes at a time...

Ah! I forgot Jaco Pastoreus, if he isn't a musician I'm the queen Elizabeth

are bass players really musicians? Wtf? of course we are- you ever tried playing bass- or any other instrument for that matter? bass is hard as crap if you listen to halfway decent music and you got to really have strength to play bass- if you give a regular guitarist a bass he'll have some trouble because he won't be use to pushing it down...bass is fun though

How does one play the bass if he didn't know music?

They buy Phil Soussan' Bass video and put fret dots all over their instrument. I'm not sure how they learn to tap their toe tho! lol

Ummm. Let me think about the original question. In short, the answer is no. In long, the answer is still no.

    Quick Joke:

How do you tell if the stage is level?

Drool comes out both sides of the bass players mouth.

Of course bassists are musicians, idiot. Anyone that plays music, be it in some small town club or live on MTV, whether it be solo guitar or tamborine, he or she is a musician.

BTW, it's kinda funny that you ask this, because I am getting a bass for my birthday, and the reason I'm in a band with my friends is because they thought I was 'musical'. :)

Bass is not just a rock 'n' roll thing it is an important part of Classical music and Acapella as well as other styles. It also adds to the low frequency of the music spectrum, making it sound complete. So those of you who think bass players are not musicians just try to listen to a few "NON MUSICIANS" like Jaco Pastorius, Mark King, Stanley Clarke, John Patitucci, Abraham Laboriel. Geddy Lee, Nathan East..... and you will learn.

    try playing the following...
    J.A.R. by Green Day
    Santeria by Sublime
    Tom Sawyer by Rush
Michael Anthony's Bass solo on Live-without a net (Van Halen)

then ask yourself the original question again

chalk up another YES vote :)
