Whoever said that anyone playing any instrument isn't a musician is either drunk, stupid or jealous because they can't play.

    Some people.

Yes, they (we) are musicians. At least the ones who write and perform music. Some people just look up a tab and learn how to play a song. Almost anyone can memorize when to move your right hand while simultaneously pressing down your left, but that doesn't make them all true musicians.

i would be inclined to say musicians are people who write music rather than necessarily playing it.

I'd say the answer is obviously yes, it's playing notes, and there are many different types of interpretations that they could have give the same chords, or even the same solo riff.

I have a friend who understands music theory and reads music. He can't write songs and the only thing he can play is the stereo...
Would he be considered a musician? Is the term musician only reserved for the creative few who write and compose??
    Are drummers musicians?

When I started playing guitar, to be called a musician would have been considered a term of abuse. Usually, when I'm asked if I play I would respond that I "use" a guitar. (In the way that you might use a hammer, that is, it's a tool for making noise sometimes musical, sometimes not;-))

Some days it feels like I can't even tie my shoes properly,
let alone wail away on my guitar and be inspirational to ppl. That's when it's called 'working':boink:

I can palay guitar and bass but don't consider myself a musician. Can't read or write music, just a chancer who plays a series of line, riff and licks. I think a lot of bassists and guitarists come into this category, although they wouldn't admit it.

Just wondering if people class singers as musicians? They produce music yet they don't have an instrument hmmmm... alternatively we could stop trying to label or define everything and just 'be' ;)

I'm probably the oldest member here because I was guitarist for a sixties recording band Chapter5 and recorded for a major record label CBS.
We have actually and recently visited the recording studio and recorded two more tracks, written by myself and another member of the band, to be released 8th October 04, only this time they will be on vinyl and our own label, as well as being on cd. because some record buyers like vinyl for "collector" purposes, as our last record on the CBS label from the sixties is of now a collectors piece worth about £400 at the last count.
We always had a demand to release another record because of our popularity on the northern soul scene(Wigan Casino uk).
So for old times sake we thought we would meet the demand before we die of old age. I hope everyone likes the recordings.

I don' t think that this is a stupid question and also if you've tried to delete the thread and have been unsuccessful, obviously others do not think that it's a stupid question.

I have to agree that anyone who can play the guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, mandilon, violin, sing etc., the list is so long, YES, they are musicians.

I admire anyone who can really play the guitar well, especially someone who can make it talk.

I would like to add that in order to write good music you must have some knowledge of a musical instrument to have the soul to write, which in turn with a musical instrument or voice or the ability to write all incorporate as to make one a musician. I do think that a band consisting of 1,2,3 or whatever consists of a group of musicians no matter if they only play the tamborine. True!
