Don't laugh at me. It's not funny.

I just got my first guitar and because money's a bit short now after the purchase I've decided to try to teach myself to play. I picked up a few books from the library that looked good for beginners but they kinda confuse me a bit.

They have simple songs in there to learn like Happy Birthday and Jingle Bells and stuff like that. They have the notes to play for the songs and then they have the chords. But when I play the chords it doesn't sound anything like the song. Isn't it supposed to? Also, when playing the guitar don't you either play the individual notes or play the chords? I mean, you can't play both at the same time can you?

It's tough starting off mate, especially when there's no-one to give you advice. Try actually singing the song and the chords might make more sense but keep at it. Here's a website which is helpful for beginners and advanced alike, have a look around when you get a minute.
    Good luck!
