Conan O'Brien stage backdrop...diffusers?

    Anyone notice where the bands play on the Conan O'Brien late show?

    There is this geometric pattern with recessed lighting emanating from
    it. Kind of like a checkerboard with some relief.

    Could these be a clever way of making something look cool and
    providing diffusion at the same time? They look strangely familiar to
    those Auralex square diffuser things you can buy.

    I got a chance to work behind the scenes there at Conan with a band that
    played there (The Candy Butchers www.candybutchers.com). That backdrop
    is purely for looks.
