As far as a multitrack studio Cool Edit is awesome, but recording is best done in Soundforge.. Using Both makes awesome tracks

Cool Edit is great all round recording software for its price - I've made some pretty awesome sounding demos using it. The one problem I have is the final mastering (making the track as "loud" as a commercial recording). I haven't had much luck getting it right with Cool Edit. If you can afford it though, try Cubase, along with Wavelab - really nice "real studio feel" to it.
