What firewalls do all of you use? I used ZoneAlarm up till recently (The Pro version not the Free), but it slowed the system to a virtual crawl. I've been using Sygate Personal firewall and it seems to do the job. Any ideas?

I think a real firewal, the hardware kind, is the best defense. My older sibling has been using it for the network, and has since successfully saved himself from two hijacking attempts. Software-wise, I do recommend ZoneAlarm. Yours may have been running at a higher CPU usage because it was on a higher priority setting. Try dampening the check interval.

I've been using Zonealarm (free ed) too, and it's saved me from several hack attempts. I now always make sure it's loaded.

I use EZ Firewall, but it's virtually the same as zonealarm.

Being paranoid, I use a router with NAT as a first line of defense. I also run ZoneAlarm for peace of mind, though it SHOULD be overkill.

Like too many things relating to the computer, I don't know if I'm doing it right or just getting lucky.

Service Pack 2 for Windows XP and Service Pack 1 for Server 2003 also include simple firewall protection software.

the "simple firewall" eats up system resources.

i use router for firewall, zonealarm for program control. can't stand media player with it's digital rights management crap.

I can't either, so I use Winamp. If I get protected content, I just don't bother keeping it.

I'm using Sygate Personal Firewall and it looks nice. If you're looking for any firewall, you have to try it.

I have router with NAT and also use Zone Alarm on both networked pc's.
Find that the combination works a treat!
