I think the GC we have in Boston is probably somewhat
    anomalous. There are a lot of nice basses in there;
I suppose being near Berklee helps. I don't know if

mid level stuff, Pedulla, Ernie Ball, the occasional Ken

I've never found much of interest in the GC bass dept
here. You may have heard discussions of our GC "bass
closet". I have seen a few interesting things in the
used/vintage department, but mostly they are into
    guitars not basses.

The local SA (just a couple of blocks up the street from
GC does much better in the Bass dept. It's about like you
say. Some nice mid level Ken Smith, Fender, etc. Nice
row of decent amps to play with. And even better they get
some really decent buys from time to time. For example
a while back they had a huge stack of Ampeg amps. Re-issues
I think. The kind with the tube amp that flips over and
locks into the cab for transport. They were DIRT cheap
    and I'm sorry I didn't get one!

But generally speaking it's no surprise that the overall
stock in both stores is designed to be drool material for
newbies and newbies moving up to the next level. Drool material
for me (Alembics, Rics, G & L, Lightwave, whatever) always seems
to be found over at the local custom guitar shop and almost never
    at GC/SA.
