True but on the other hand, you've got all 10 fingers to play on the keyboard, while on the guitar, notes sound one at a time.
If you strum really really fast, you can talk about a max of 6 notes.

10 notes sure create more harmony than one.

As a guitar teacher, it's actually better to learn piano. I've read a few replies, and it's true that guitar is much easier to pick up and make a go of it in a short period of time. Piano however, gives the individual a better insight on how music is played and composed. Once I learned a few things on piano, I've found the theory incredibly easy to put toward my saxophone and guitar playing.

For the record though, my piano playing really sucks!!!!

It's a lot easier to stretch a 13th chord out of the piano than squish fingers together on gtr

Play piano first. All other instruments are much easier to pick up after that. If you play guitar first, you may regret not taking your parents offer for piano.

Think of it this way, it's cheaper to buy a guitar on your own and have your parents fork out the money for a piano. If your parents buy you a guitar, and then you want a piano, you might have to shell out some big bucks for one.

DO THE PIANO AND DO THE GUITAR THING ON THE SIDE!!!!

By the way, I'm really screwing myself as I am a guitar teacher.

    :confused2

This forum is a choice between learning one instrument or the other. It isn't about the choice of instruments or effects on different songs. It's a general commentary on which instrument to learn first.

I think it's a bit obvious that you would choose one or the other instrument for any particular song. You would choose the one you beleive would match the song in the format you are doing it in.

what about the best of both worlds? a keytar? ;)

I play both piano and guitar. I'm not really great at either but I started off on piano. In all honesty, I'd say pick the instrument that you -want- to start with first. Because you're never going to get good at anything you don't want to do.

I'd rather play the guitar, unfortunately i only have the talent on the piano. Eh... you know what, I'd rather play both.

I also play both, and I prefer piano. In a way it's easier and more flexible.

    back and forth

I get tapped to play both in my band....sometimes even during the same song! Still like the keys better, though....
