Just wondering what the general average is here as far as playing live gigs. I generally play about 6 times a month with my midi duo.

Usually about 8 but it's pretty quiet at the moment and also they're about to introduce the smoking ban in pubs over here so i don't know how that's going to affect things

    changes month to month,
stats for the last two years are
2002 95 gigs in 11 months (we take Jan off for a rest)
    2003 102 gigs in 11 months
Average of 25,000 Klms travelled a year to venues.
Each gig uses approx 63 metres of cables and leads
This means approx 12,600 metres of cables rolled in a year
Total weight of gear is around 900kg
Total lug in and out of venues total 180,000Kg lifted every year
I tend to break an average of 1.5 strings a gig
This equals 150 strings for the year at a cost of AU$525 per year
and a length end to end of 1.2 Klms.
Looking at giging using stats instead of the bottom of a schooner glass gets scary, I'm off for a drink!

I usually play week long gigs at pubs, but have been doing a lot of one- nighter private parties that really helps pay the big bills .

The smoking ban kicked in a couple yrs back now the crowd all listen to use from the confines of their 'Cancer wards'
funny the owners spent upwards of $50,000 to renovate,
yet cry poverty when bands ask for adjusting wages that seem to have been stuck in the 40's

pretty much 4-5, 2-3 day gigs per month-so every week basically...and yes, I make a living at it, but only because I own the equipment and vehicle, and do all the sequencing and book the gigs...(guitar players are hired guns)
several years back it used to be 6-7 nights per week, travelling 3-4 months at a time without getting back home...most places won't book full weeks anymore though...

Since I originally posted this question the situation has changed dramatically for me. I am now making a living doing this and playing on average 3-4 days a week. The summer months have been even better averaging 5-6 gigs a week.

Yeah I make a living at it. Play up to 5 gigs a week sometimes. Lotsa one nighters. Do a lot of casino work right now. The casinos have more disposable income. Pubs and clubs generally work of liquor sales and that determines how much they'll pay a band. Casino's don't have to worry about their liquor sales. They hire who they want and generally get what they believe works in their show rooms.

Tricks to making a living at it are:

1: Have your own gear (you get to charge rental for the gear and pocket a few more bucks).

    2: Do your own sequencing.

    3: Use hired guns.

4: Book yourself, or have a REAL GOOD agent. I've been really lucky through the last five years and have a group of people who work pretty hard for me.

5: Always wear a smile, even when you're really p.o.'d. The people that hire you generally have no idea.

    ;)

I average 15-18 per month....and work a day job on top. However, its all been good the last few years until GST came along. Now with a registered business I'm struggling not because of the thousands of cable ffet rolled out each year or the 1.5 string broken per fortnight but the BL**DY paperwork - especially with the hired guns I use!!! Grrr.....! I hate it the most when I have to take tax from other muso's not willing to register or provide a receipt!!
    Hmph!

Well pretty much the same here. Our duo "Broken Glass" here on the East Coast of Canada play 2-3 gigs each week for the past eight years. Surviving like everyone else. It's a tough business for those who love it and stick with it. Trying to make a living at it is definately hard, especially when ya get young guns throwing a band together just for kicks and cuts in on the business because they usually do it just to get a bar tab or a couple of bucks. Not easy eh!
