Intermittent 1202-VLZ

Discussion in 'rec.audio.pro' started by Irwin Schwartz, Sep 1, 2003.

  1. Hi All:

My Mackie 1202-VLZ recently developed an intermittent right channel. It
completely cuts out from time to time, but returns to normal after a short
while, only to cut out again (and return again). The same problem occurs using
all of the channel inputs. I checked the most probable causes (cabling, pots,
etc.) but can't locate the source of the intermittency.

    Any suggestions?

    TIA

Ah, most might miss the unique symptoms to this problem, but I can tell you
with a high level of certainty that your mixer is what we call "broken", and
requires that it be "fixed". You might want to get a 2nd opinion though.
  3. It's most probably the insert socket. Get some switch cleaner and spray a
little inside both the left and right main insert jack sockets, then plug a
jack plug in and out a few times which will clean the dirty contact. You
may even clear it without having to use any cleaner.
I think you'll find similar insert sockets on each channel. While you're at
it you can clean these as well.
The only other thing that goes wrong on these desks are the faders.

    Gareth.

Ribbon cable connectors. Contact Mackie Tech Support. Maybe they'll
give you a new set of cables, maybe they'll take it for repair for
free, maybe they'll want money. These days with Mackie it probably
depends more on the phase of the moon than anything else. They used to
be very generous with out-of-warranty repairs, particularly for a
known and common problem, but these days they need to make some
    serious money.

  5. Forget cables and such, your problem resides inside of the Mackie. Simply
take it in for a good cleaning and have them check it over. I doubt you'll
end up with either a major bill nor a dead Mackie. All equipment needs
maintenance at some point along the way. Get used to it and if something
doesn't work right, either take it to a qualified technician or simply learn
how to do problem determination yourself.

Not very likely, since that would affect both channels equally on this
    particular unit.

There are no main inserts on a 1202VLZ, only individual ones on the
    first four channel strips.

    then plug a

No, the pre/post aux switches go intermittent sometimes as well (not
relevant to this problem though), and the ribbon cables are a notorious
weak point, as Mr. Rivers mentioned.
