hope this isn't a dumb question.
i have been using midi files for ages.
then i discover kar files, which as far as i know, sometimes come up with the words when used on a programme like cakewalk...

next a friend comes around with a cd disc, full of karaoke files. these play on my computer like the first old fashioned karaoke files we saw here in south africa about 10 or more years ago. where the words pop up at the right moment and are highlighted when they are supposed to be sung, and with kitchy backgrounds and sexy women or beautiful scenary.

do all kar files do this if opened properly, or is there an intrinsic difference between the kar files and these karaoke files i have just received on disc?
what have i missed: the size
    the extension (kar vs dat)
or the correct programme to open

Based on your information, I guess the CD of your friend is a VCD (with dat files). If you have been using MIDI for long time and don't like watching those sexy women in the background while you are singing. I'll say, quickly put your disc away and stick with MIDI.

If there's still anything you want to know about MIDI Karaoke you are in the right place :)

hey, i am fully in touch with my masculine side. just the sexy 'chicks' are sooooooooo corny!
but hey, who's looking anyway. i am following the words!

    seriously.
its a great medium for teaching songs to students.
    thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, most of them are cheap productions with minimal 'chicks' quality. Then I rather go shopping with my wife (watching the shoppers) ;)

Ok, back to karaoke. If you really want to use for education purpose. MIDI is the best media because you can change tempo and key without any side effect or simply run a solo to learn the melody. If you want you can even replace the lyrics. There are so many things you can do...

Where to play your midi and kar files

If you want a better program to play the MIDI and KAR files, also MK! you can download for free the GoSing karaoke player (you can change Tempo and Key, also you can use the background imagens you want).

You can get it at http://www.gosing.com

For education purposes also enternaining, it's very usefull.

    Best wishes
