While everyone's at it could you please tell me if there's any way to turn a midi into a polyphonic tone for a mobile?

There are plenty of threads describing the process. You just have to search for them!

A kar file is a midi file but with special events added which can be lyric or text events.
You can add these events with a sequencing software, but the timing of the lyrics can be difficult.
I use Karakan to add lyrics, but the midi file needs to have the melody track first.
My favorite player is Karawin - it plays midi, kar, mp3 and mp3 with ID3 tags for lyrics, and I can even add guitar chords in a different color.

Making your own karaoke midi files can take some time to learn, but is worth it in the end.

Kar files are normal midi files with lyric or text events added.
How they are displayed when they are played depends entirely on the playback software you use. Some players display the text only, some allow you to add a picture as a background.
If you check out www.karawin.com there are some screenshots there which will give you the idea.
