Letters to MD

Discussion in 'rec.music.percussion' started by Anthony Giampa, Aug 24, 2003.

  1. I was at work lastnight and I busted out my copy of the latest Modern
Drummer, with Jack on the cover. Two of the letters kind of irked me. One
was 'why wasn't Brian Blade in the Readers Poll?' and the other one was
(IIRC) 'Why didn't Neil Peart get picked for best recording?'

I've heard great things about both drummers, though I admit I am not a fan
of either (i.e. have none of thier recordings, but may have heard them
several times without knowing it was them). Anyhow, since I'd begun playing,
I's always heard about 'Peart worship' and all the Rush dorks out there who
worship Peart and list him as the best drummer ever, etc etc. I was sort of
under the impression (largely by what this group always said about them)
that we always just poke fun at these guys for being so obsessesed and
everything but it was all in good humor. I sort of think, don't whine, dude,
Peart has been in the Limelight (yuk yuk) of drumming since, what the late
70's? It's about time he's not in the poll for such reasons (even though the
poll is pretty much a crock anyway). It's the principal of the thing. The
uninformed teen punks that read the magazine FINALLY didn't vote Neil in for
    whatever category.

The one about Brian Blade... I know I'd heard his name awhile ago, probably
when I first started playing (in 1999). Maybe he just hasn't_quite_hit the
mainstream yet. If he's as good as people say it shouldn't be long before
    he's in there.

Anyhow, my one gripe about the Readers Poll, aside from the fact that again
it's BS anyway, is that Philly Joe isn't in the Hall of Fame. Because he's
primarily a jazz drummer from the 50's, 60's and 70's, he will NEVER get
into the HOF. He just can't, because it's way too late. You'd have to get
every teenager on the planet to send in those little cards with Philly Joe
on it, which we all know can never happen. To me, Philly Joe not being in
there is reason enough to discount the whole poll thing.

Rob, please don't respond going 'geez Nat, you really think actual drummers
care about this MD reader poll tripe?' Because I already DON'T care... =)
I'm just saying why, and that people shouldn't bother complaining about who
did or didn't get in. That's that.

Anthony Giampa wanted everyone in rec.music.makers.percussion to know that

well, whether you like their stuff or not...I think it can be argued
that Joshua Redman, Chris Potter and Wayne Shorter are three mainstream
names in jazz (not too mention the Brecker/Hancock/Hargove disk).

but that poll is complete BS, so who really cares.
