I am new to the midi world and was just wondering how one makes a midi file. Is there any special program that I need or can I use Winamp? Also, can I convert Wav files to Midi files?

    Hi,
I sequence all my midis using Cakewalk Pro v9.
I have an effects processor that I use for all my guitar work (ART SGX 2000 Express) that has Midi output, and theoretically can be run in to Cakewalk, but I have yet to figure out how. I don't have a Midi Keyboard or anything else right now, but the easy way would be to capture midi input from a midi instrument.

All my midi work is done by placing each note in for length and pitch manually - build each track one by one (Bass, Piano, Persussion, etc). Then save as a Midi file - Voila.

There are easier ways than the way I do it =)

All you really need is the right software.
Cakewalk Sonar or Cakewalk, Steinberg Cubase or Nuendo, Logic Audio Platinum or Finale 2002 are all good applications that work with or create Midi files.

Converting Wav to Midi can be tricky - Wav2Midi can convert Mono 8bit 8k wav files into midi.
    More info about Wav2Midi from:
    www.esatclear.ie/~padraigmyers/software/nakednote.htm

    Good Luck!

I am not sure that there is a program that would convert wav 2 midi, but I am sure that someone out there will find one or create one.

    sequencing

You might even consider trying power tracks pro, a great inexpensive software that has worked great for me, this will give you the chance to try sequencing without spending so much.

Midi is just the data of the keys you play on a keyboard or other midi device. It isnt an audio format like Wav or MP3. So to convert wav or mp3 to midi, the song would loose a lot of information.

It is not possible to convert an complete audio track to a midi file.
There are some techniques to convert a single track monofone melody to midi and even that doesn't work out very well. :(

There is one Mp3/Wav to midi program I tried that was decent it was called WIDI. You can download it from www.widisoft.com but its only a demo, but its the best you can get. The research is still pretty far away from getting accurate midi notes from an actual song..

Wav to Midi is nearly impossible b/c the program would actually have to separate individual instruments and then figure out which notes they were playing... and that doesn't account for all the variations for which you can play an instrument... i'd say it's a long time coming before a good program is out there to do it.

To start sequencing midis download either:-

    Logic Audio
    Cubase or
    Cakewalk

You can dload them for free off Kazaa

I am using Logic Audio Platinum v4.7 (thanks Merlin) but they are all good.

If you need more help just keep posting. There are lots of good sequencers here that can help you. Good Luck!

I agree that most of the wav to midi programs suck.

As for writing/sequencing your own midi files cakewalk is best; it does however cost a bit to buy.

If you want something for free you should try www.download.com and see what it comes up with. just type in midi into the search engine.

I found a program that converts MP3 to Wav, then you could use another program to convert the WAV to a MIDI

anything to midi conversion will suck.go to a warez and look for a basic sequencing program to start. the cakewalks and cubases are huge programs to start with and not easy.
