Hey guys. Just browsing around... Thinking about stuff.

I've been thinking about how this site has evolved in the past couple years... how much it's grown and where it all started from. I have to ask myself sometimes 'do people really like this site?', 'where is it going to be in another year?', 'is it really going anywhere?'. I honestly don't know the answers to these questions and it worries me.

I tend to be a pessimist sometimes, but when I look at the raw numbers I just get discouraged. Maybe it's just because I'm looking into it too much, but I honestly think something is missing from this site. I've seen people come and go. I look at the stats and see things going up... but at the same time I see things going down. I also see a member database with 24k + members and not even that many topics on the boards. To me this is just lack of interest. People come here, get what they want, leave, and never come back.

As much as I try to maintain things, it's becoming harder and harder. I thank the people that have helped me out and asked for nothing in return. If you ask yourself 'me?' then, yes you ;). But anyway, as the site grows I feel this unsteady, rocky, plain that the site is being dragged along. This partially has to do with the problems the site has run into with hosting.

So, if you bothered to read all this then you might as well answer me the following questions:

Do you think the site is going in the right direction?

What recommendations would you make to make things better? (navigation, content, etc.)

    Premium member system? eh?

How would you make the site better? (after all, it is a very interactive format)

Thanks for your time, guys, I appreciate it.

One thing has always crossed my mind John...Do you think it's too easy to get midi's here ??..and if so is that why people are joining, getting what they want and not bothering their arses to contribute anything.
What if there was a MB$ price for each midi, thereby encouraging/making people contribute more to the community ?
I personally thought that Premium Membership, with a bit of tweaking, was a good deal.
I also think the site is going in the right direction, in the sense that you can get plenty of 'free' midi's here but also have the option of buying professional files. As far as navigation goes, i don't think it could be much clearer, apart maybe from the FAQ link which i think could be made a bit more visible.

    Introspection 'R' us??

Lemme throw some questions back atcha..... I've always assumed thet you started this site because you enjoyed sequencing and wanted: 1. An outlet for your stuff, 2. A way to converse with others in that interest, 3. an unquenchable urge to see if people, indeed, could make money on the net ;).... First, am I close? Second, Do those reasons still apply?

Who was your original target audience.... Did you think of musicians, hobbyists, cellphone users, kids? Has that audience idea changed and has the board changed with it? Are you content/pleased with that change? Has your 'target demographic' grown or shrunk? What have you/we specifically done to meet a changing target?

There will always be people who take what they want and run, I'm looking at those stats http://board.midibuddy.net/vbstats.php and seeing 9000 active member - probably a third of which will not return. Its the way of the net.... I think lamenting their loss is little more that wasted time. I cannot count how many times I've gone to a site to get what I need and NOT joined the forum. Your/Our system forces them to join to get what they want, if you want more realistic participation in the forum aspect you can dump the 5 post rule and see what happens.... or you/we can accept how it is and think of the 6000 odd people who keep coming back.

Y'know what - I've gotta halt that train o' thought here and get on with my day.... I'll be back with more Q&A though ;)

A 'Required Five Posts a Week' in order to use attatchments would encourage people to stick around...

But I voiced my forum advice before and got banned for it so thats all from me..

John- I know you definately have a tendency to be pessimistic but this is one thing I know you should be confident about. I love this site and not just because you made it. I've met so many nice people and have made new friends. I can speak from watching you work on this site. You have such a passion and love for it that it almost makes me wanna cry. Don't let a few low numbers discourage you. Look at all the members on here who come and post regularly- who are faithful and dedicated members. Don't worry about the numbers. I'm sure in time people will become more and more dedicated. You can force someone to join if they dont want. Right now, focus on what you do have- great people who help you out for nothing and support the site.
I think the site is going in a good direction. I think the premium membership is a great deal. I do think the MB$ for each midi is a good idea. I love you babe! Keep your head up. The site is great!

    Yep ;)

The only thing that's changed slightly is the cell phone user group. Since cell phones have been using midi files lately this became a new thing for midi's. MIDI has been around for a long time, and this brought a new revival. However, I fear that it will soon be replaced with something else.

I've been thining about diffent 'hooks' lately that would keep users coming back. I think it all comes down to content and particular topics fitting different user and topic niches

    Thanks Jeanie.

Good point. Charging MB $ for MIDI Files has been thought of. Judging by how many people are already confused, multiply that by 100 and that's how confused they'd be with a pay per file system. It might work in the future... I'm not sure. Maybe if I figure out how to do it.. that would be a start.

The premium membership will be coming soon. It keep getting pushed back due to server stuff. Thanks for your comments.

That's not a bad idea. I think, however, it would just promote more junk posting.

I wasn't here when you voiced your opinion before. Perhaps it was in the way that you did it. What do you think?

I know you're on howardforums. They use the same software I use. I would LOVE to have a forum that big.. just not the hosting bill every month! I can't imangine! Then again, a forum that big might lose a sense of community with all the members.

    More Q&A,.....
•What is/was your idealistic main objective for this site?..... realizing that the topic is more specific than that of 'off-topic' or 'howardforums'...
•Who ARE the people who keep coming back and what is their relation to that idealistic goal? Who are the people who 5PW and what is their relation to that goal?
•Let's assume that the premie membership doesn't net the cash you need to keep the board liquid..... I've heard (the grapevine) that you about come up even.... any strategies for increased revenue from the site to make up the difference? Money has to be an issue... (and you brought it up in your post @ Adrenachrome so I'm not being rude asking this time ;))

    Onto otherstuff...
I'd like to hear your ideas in the 'hook' department.... Some ideas for discussion (meaning that I've not thought them through and any/all could be easily refuted... this is how brainstorming begins so everybody comment! - ALSO.. I realize that these defy software as it stands - just ideas ;))
•You've got the 'similar threads' thing going.... Perhaps members could fill in an interest form as part of signup - like all of the surveys I get suckered into online - and the 'similar thread' function could be used for emailings
•Adrenachrome's idea has merit.... even if it was just a 'lapsed membership' kind of thing... rather than 5 a week, or 5 for every download (as the pay-per system might encourage), Your membership lapses after 30 days without posts... you need only post regularly or post again (once, 5 whatever) to download files. The warning point system will allow us to ban the chronic tr@shers either way :)
•I agree that MIDI's as ringers will be, to some degree, a passing fad. If you want to make that section work perhaps allowing some other file types... mmf?? in the mix - WITH SIZE LIMITS will allow that section to grow with the medium... A wise cellphone user once told me that its all about quality... and the quality of the 'real thing' ringer has a lot to be desired ATM

And suggestive - errr.... suggestion otherstuff....
•YAY @ Pol for the FAQ suggestion.... yeesh.... half the people on the net don't even know what FAQ stands for ::blush:remembering asking someone myself!: I've tried to put tha answers to some of the most common issues at the top of threads... I think the "ARTIST TITLE" in requests has helped... and the ones in the newbie forum seem to be lessening the # of threads with those 2 posts... perhaps we can globalize that idea a wee bit more? The key is getting the important info in the subject line... no-one opens to read!!
•Knock the 'polls' forum out of the top section.... its a junk collector anyway... Put ringtone section above MIDI section based on its traffic, then the music forum, then the midi forum, then other. Polls needs to be in 'other' with the other annoying forum - midibot ;).
•Maybe add an "Intro to board" forum above announcements... all locked threads (hmmm - combine my earlier idea with this)
•The search feature is still confusing because amazon and hittrax are stacked on top of board search... now that you've done the little search box at the top of the page perhaps you can re-order the other search page? (Hey wait - Use 'HitTrax file database' in the top searchbox... confusing there otherwise). The search page might include a 'quick' board search at the top of the page with a targetted link to the advanced search below.

YEESH - that's enough for now!!! Especially as it may be a week before you have time to hash it through..... I haven't even begun to address some of your questions. I'll plug away until you tell me to shutit! ;) My most important suggestion to you John? Your life is more important than this board.... Spread out the responsibility (I have some suggestions there TOO if you're interested.... PM me!) :sigh: I should run the world ;):laugh2::blush:

Jeanies got some good ideas about the site to make it run smoother especially the search page I found that strange too that hittrax and MB searches are below the other ones, anyway....

If you want to hook ppl John u gotta make it more like a game - thats what hooked me and so many others - THE NAMEGLOW. I had to post and save my MBcash so I could get the elusive nameglow.

PPl all want inspiration right, they need to be inspired to post - the pay for midis(with MB cash) is absolutely perfect! and if u say it will encourage trashposters, I think there is enough of us here to delete posts and ban idiots.

It needs to be like a game that keeps you coming back, there has to be goals to reach like the nameglow, or save cash to buy midis. The FEATURE STORE is the key! You have the right idea with MBcash beleive me, but we have all this cash and nothing to spend it on !

Make it like life, where u have to save money, buy midis, buy a car, get a loan, buy a house, get married, have kids, get divorced, have a breakdown, become famous, lose it all to drugs, all that stuff - u know what I mean - like a board game or sumtin...

Its the GAME that will hook ppl

I agree with VOG the nameglow hooked me pretty well and as I tried to achieve that the forums then took hold.
Give them something to aim for and they'll stay I reckon

Look, John, I know I haven't been around much lately, but the last thing I would want to see you do is give up. You've got a great thing going here, and don't worry about the people that come, post 5, download and leave. They're not who this site is about. This site is about the community that has been created by you. Remember -- If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have some of the awesome friends I do today. ** eyes Alan **

I can definitely understand how a site like this could become quite a workload, but you have to realize that we're all willing to help out in whatever way we can. You've got an entire community behind you, ready to help out if ever called upon.

I might not be the best person to be saying all this, considering I haven't even shown my face around here for months... (Well, except for a very unique drunken post...) But I still think about the people I've met on here, and grown to care about more than the average fellow forum members. This place is one of the sites I hope will never die, because I know just how much time and effort you've put into it, John, and none of us are willing to just let it fall apart.

If you don't see motivation in the sheer number of members (I'm not talking actives, I'm talking total) that sign up to MB every day, I don't see how else to say that we are very grateful for you and your time and effort.

Inactive users are just that -- Inactive. That doesn't mean they don't like the site. That means that you've managed to help them to a point where they no longer need help. If the Active to Inactive ratio was 1:3, I'd be happy with that on my own site. That would tell me that I've helped 3 people so well that they haven't needed any more help. (Or that I've scared 3 people off, but hey... Trying to optomistic here! :D) Especially when there's this many users. I wouldn't worry about the people that post 5 and leave, because they're not the focus of the site. The community is, and we're all here for you.

I am not qualified really to add my five cents worth, I have only been around for a couple of months, but whilst I have been here I have really enjoyed myself.

I love the sense of community you have amongst your hardcore members, it is easy to see that they stay and enjoy the boards because they are so well put together.

Jeanie had some great suggestions on how to make them better still.

    This idea in particular ....

And VOG and Xynan said exactly what I would have said on how to hook and keep people interested good, sound, valid reasons. Give the masses something to play with and aim for apart from the midis and ringtones .. the chit chat forum is an ideal vehicle for this many people love to interact and this is what keeps them coming back for more and more !

You have done a wonderful job, and established a thriving community, made friends and had fun doing it, and you have a lot of loyal helpers keeping the boards running smoothly. What more could you ask for .. oh yes better income potential would be a strong motive and incentive to keep these forums alive.

Maybe offer small web hosting facilities just for images along with an upload box for a tiny monthly fee (maybe put a size limit on the image file of say 50kb so people would have to use their image editors to shrink a file ? that would cut download time a lot) .. I don't know .. I am not versed in how much bandwidth costs or how much effort it takes to set up such an item.

whichever way you decide to go, I am sure you will make the right decisions, you have done great so far.

Just to let you know that one of the first things that I do when I turn the 'puter on every day is stop by the forum to see what's up and what I can contribute. For me it's addicting. I didn't come here to download midi files. I came to gather knowledge about midis from people who had been down that road already and in doing so found much more than I originally came for.

I am brand new to this site - I came to download a ringtune and now I find that I agree with Rankinfile - when I log on to my computer I come to midibuddy to see what is new, what I can learn and what I can contribute...

I agree also with the idea that you should set a minimum post per week to stay active - as it is not so hard to come and contribute!!!

Most websites I visit have some sort of 'game' element - you participate you earn points/money you buy things! I agree with voice of god, if you look at something like neopets where you get to spend your points on things for a 'pet' - people are hooked on the game !!!!

If you could buy more things/services with mb money this may encourage more people to participate!
What new things you can offer in the feature store hmmm I will have a think about that.........maybe we can all have a midibuddy virtual pet that we need to feed and look after LOL to 'borrow an idea'

This is a great site and I just wanna say I have enjoyed discovering it!

i think everything's a-okay with the site... except that the leechers get the files they want real fast. stricter rules would be necessary here :) as for me, you can rest assured ill be here for the long haul. keep up the great work boss.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm back in school right now and after a long band camp (12 hours + a day) and a couple days of classes I come back to see that yesterday we set a new record with almost 16,000 unique visitors. That's certainly encouraging.

Unfortunately I'm kinda behind with a couple things. The site still hasn't been moved to the new server. I don't know what the delay is with that. ugg.. After this is done this is when the premium membership system will be put in. Some parts are still being tested and other ideas are being thrown around.

There's a couple other projects I will also be working on:
http://johnsworld.com The basic layout is there. It's going to be a forum for famous people named John and other guys named John. It has potential. :)

Also, I'm a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. I created the web page for my chapter. It's located http://wcusigep.com (the DNS hasn't be taken care of yet, and I didn't make the flash intro) There's a couple more finishig touches that I have to put in. I'm happy with that layout :)

Finally, I've read through your suggestions and I'm going to try to combine all and do what I can with my limited knowledge of PHP.

Isn’t this something you should be talking to with all your mods?? What I think should be done mainly is to go against thread digging. If this is agreed upon, where as all mods would enforce the rule then new posts would be concentrated to the new threads there fore more replies and more output equals organization

ps this is just a though.....
