I recommend a mic between the price range of 100-200 and getting a good mic preamp like the Roland MMP-2.

You'll need a condenser definitely, if you're money can push to a tube condenser got for it. Go to www.thomann.de and search for their t-bone range of mics which are actually made by sennhieser and are much cheaper than the rodes, neumanns ect and sound just as good.

"A good digital recorder these days is loaded with emulators that you could take some cheesy headset mic and modify it to the point that it would sound like a $500 mic! "

This is true up to a point, emulators can change the characher of a sound to make one mic sound like another but you do need a good mic to start with. So the emulator knows what it's dealing with.

I know people who have had good results from the AKG 414. It is reasonably priced. Check musicians friend for prices.

Try the Audio Technica Midnight Blue Range from the 1000H or 1000L Vocal mic, excellent high output with crisp and bright sound, or Shure SM58. Guitar use SM57 or Audio Technica Midnight Blue 2000 or 3000 series. All except the Shure are less than £80.00 retail.

The Behringers are very good and fairly inexpensive; especially at the moment as the rock shop has them at sale price. We have and use two of them, and are about to get a third.

any mic by rodes. You simply can't beat the quality for the price.
