Hey can someone tell me what things are necessary, or needed to create a midi file? Is there a simple way to just get a program and press some keys, or do you need to connect an external keyboard?

You can enter notes either way: software or electronic keyboard.

What is not that simple is how to create a decent midi file, which is accurate (to the audio version) and which doesn't sound too cheesy.

To get started you just need a computer with a sound card and speakers.

And you can start with a free progam called http://www.anvilstudio.com

If it's something you really enjoy, you can always invest in better equipment and software.

I've used Anvil and its very easy, has some good features, and the best part is .... its FREE!!! Gad Bless America.

I use it also to pull midi files off the net, modify them via Anvil, and load them onto a CF card, which goes into my Triton LE keyboard. Works well, most of the time.

Are you making your own music or going off another song?

You need a keyboard and the right cable for input for a live feel or use the mouse for note by note. If your sound card is a Creative SB series then use better quality soundfonts to hear the sounds.
