I have Cubasis and it's easy but I don't know any freeware that'll do the trick. You maybe have a way of getting Cubasis!!

I know that Cakewalk Sonar and Home Studio, as well as Geniesoft Overture will allow you to save as either MIDI 0 or MIDI 1.

    Yeah! and it's free

I have downloaded Music MasterWorks, it's good but it's a shareware version

If you wants to try it you could get it on http://www.musicmasterworks.com/

I read that due to the nature of what makes up a midi (computer code) it's virtually impossible to "convert" mp3 to midi. It'll be really really rough at best.... or so "they" say.... who are they anyway?

With the utilisation of SoundFont, it can be quiet easy to render MIDI files to WAV. Timidity, MIDISyn, and Synthfont (my personal favorite) are such programs that can render MIDI files with SoundFont. As for the exported WAV, just convert it to MP3 with a LAME frontend.

Just use some kind of Phone Tune Tool which works quite well (but it's shareware), it can do much things with the files (converting to polyphonic, converting to keystokes (all brands!!) etc.)
