I've been running around the internet a bit and can't seem to find any information on this... is there any way at all to convert a MIDI sequence to an audio format (preferably MP3, but I can convert the output file to MP3 using a second program if need be) EXACTLY the way it plays on my computer?

I've tried online converters, converters that use recording, those that don't, free trial converters, and even recording directly by connecting my computer's audio in/out ports. The converters all used their own unique instrument sets and when I did the recording the sound was distorted. I've heard good things about TotalRecorder, but I'd rather not spend money on something if I don't have to... is there any other way I can do this?

Is there maybe some way to tell what instrument set my sound card uses so that I can configure some program to match it? Anything?
