download.com offers some converters, or just use the P2P Program Limewire

P2P is bad news.. don't touch the stuff, or you will end up in a very corrupt environment.

you'l have to convert MIDI to WAV using wavetable program then convert WAV to MP3

FYI, the term we're looking for here is to render MIDI files to WAV, and then encode or compress to MP3.

You actually can NOT covert a wav file into a MIDI file. However there are programs which "claim" they can do this but the fact is that their coversion quality suffers. But there are companies which will covert a wav or MP3 file into a MIDI file, doing so by ear, and this is the only real way to convert a wav. One campany to check out would be HitTrax.

If you want a reeeeeeeeeeal nice midi to wave software, I can't think of anything better than using SynthFont, for these 3 reasons:

    1/It's free

2/Unlike the real-time recording process (which is still being used by even many expensive softwares like Cubase SX, Sonar 3 vv), SynthFont's rendering capability can do the job in less than 1 minute in case you've got a midi file which plays back in 5 minutes or so.

3/Before rendering, consider trying various sound fonts, load them right up in SynthFont, if the midi sounds better, or more realistic, then go on with the rendering.

Now, how can you beat a software like that?

Wave to mp3, or vice versa, or wave to ogg, wma, mpc etc is not a problem: just audio file format conversions.

Going from wave to midi is a totally different kind.
We're - that means mostly the Russian mathematicians/programmers - still a galaxy away from reaching the destiny.

Going from midi to wave is very easy, but usually involving slow, real-time recording.
But there's the best rendering tool available, and for free: just see my post again.

Yeah, that's true, this midi-to-wave feature alone is sufficient to put SynthFont on the "best freewares" list.

Just make sure to turn off the "To Speakers" button before you do the rendering.

There really is no best, but I'm not going to get into any in-depth discussion on that right now. I've tried dozens of GM banks, and have found the following titles in order of size to be the best, IMO.

Search around; I'm sure you'll find some of them. The SoundFont community deteriorated quickly in the past few years, leaving nobody wanting to host such large files for quick download. Somehow, I've got to get these files available by special request.

What Zandro said. You might have a look at http://www.hammersound.net (Sounds->Soundfont Library). I've been recommended Merlin Gold, Cadenza, and Vicman 34. There are bound to be other good ones. (I've also heard about Fluid & Taiji Generation, but haven't tried them.)

I tend to use cooledit - click record - then play the midi / kar file in mediaplayer or your player choice and you can then choose to output the file from cooledit either as wave or MP3.

Merlin really stinks. Just another clone of the CT8. Cadenza is OK, but that flute drives me mad. If ANYONE can find Vicman34, please let me know where to download it. P2P networks are out of the question. Fluid is awesome, and Taiji is a large clone bank. 95% identical to Music Man, and a couple others I decided to delete a while ago.
