Contest is closed: Vote here: http://board.midibuddy.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8343

    Hey guys...
It's been about a week since the last contest ended...
I can always tell when we need another contest - the natives grow restless :D

We're going to have a contest to design a themesong for MIDIBuddy. Perhaps we can con John into embedding the winning midi into the front page...

    1st place $1000
    2nd place $500
    3rd place $250
Honorable Mention: nothing - but recognition of being someone who almost something ;)

There are no real strict rules on this one - jst that it is to be an ORIGINAL standard MIDI files less than 5 minutes long
You can sequence them any way you like, but they must be original music. You can only enter once this time

Contest will run a little longer this time to give people a chance to sequence. Contest closes NOV 13 - that's 2 weeks.
Then we'll do the usual voting poll to pick the winner.

FINALLY! A Contest that has SOMETHING to do with what this board is al about

Attach em here, and good luck to everyone.

Hot about a bot script that goes through all the requests, renames threads, deletes dups and moves all filled requests to the new forum?

    Naaaah -
We'd be out of a job then, wouldn't we?
    ;)

Artisan, you ALWAYS are looking for the toughest things for us to do! Luckily, I have exclusive rights to a song that was just written by one of my friends! Anyways, this may take a while to sequence, so I think I might have it ready for the due date. Watch for my entry! :D

I've found that if I don't keep everyone busy doing something - things get nuts around here...

Looking forward to hearing your sequence Dstruct!

    Artistdude,

That's some serious pentatonic work in that first file :). What happened to the Harpsichord and Atmosphere acompaniment?

Sorry. "Pentatonic" describes a five note scale or grouping. Music that is "pentatonic" concentrates on these 5 note groups. I've attached a song I like that is pentatonic in nature.

The reason I called your piece pentatonic is that it seems to be played "on the black keys" (i.e. the black keys on a keyboard). The black keys on a keyboard form a Major pentatonic scale (C# D# F# G# A#). Your song contains many of these notes.

Here's an example of a pentatonic scale:
    http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory25penta.htm

    Here are some more examples:
    http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~ef/music/tunes/Pentatonic.htm

I actually quite like the sound of pentatonics - I think they perhaps exemplify some of the attributes of primitive music, but also seem to be a fundamental sort of music.

Anyway, I meant that as a compliment of sorts, and wondered whether you had chosen that approach deliberately or not (apparently not).

As for the Harpsichord and Atmosphere, that MIDI file contains two empty tracks (4 & 5). I just wondered whether you had deleted those two tracks of accompaniment or simply never started them. :)

Sorry for the confusion, I was merely trying to stimulate discussion.

p.s. Found a couple of nice Music Theory sites while gathering the above info:
    http://www.dolmetsch.com/theoryintro.htm
    http://www.musictheory.net/

PLEASE NOTE: This file attachment is NOT a theme song entry. It is merely for demonstrating a pentatonic tune.
