i'm interested in adding a midi to my homepage, but i'm worried about copyright laws and such. if i do put one up, what has to be with it so that i don't get in trouble for it?

Don't worry about it. Most copyright agencies only target huge sites with thousands of files.

If you are talking about a midi that plays when you open your site, just make sure you give the option to switch it off, coz not everyone has a good quality sound card, and the beeps of a midi can get rather irritating. Otherwise there shouldn't be a problem.
