Why do we have to issue 5 posts before downloading?

I can understand the registering bit, and to an extent the 5 posts, but surely you just end up with people (like me) posting absolute rubbish for 5 posts just to get the download.

Cool place though. Will come back soon.

Ahh, just noticed on the index screen the newbie advice bit.

Sorry - just used to a different forum (VW) where you don`t have to scroll down the titles.

you learn something new every day. Think that makes 5 now. Hoorah!

Yes, we do have problems with people trash posting just to get their 5 posts. Which means us Mods are kept busy by sifting these out and deleted them. So, why have this rule? Well, it is in place to encourage people to stick around rather than just download midi files. The board has lots of topics and it's community is growing and growing. You have your 5 posts Uk Mexi but stick around - you'll be surprised :)

UK Mexi - Just exactly like SI said... Speaking for myself, a few other staff members and several others who have admitted to this...
I most likely would never have stuck around if not for the 5 post rule... I'm generally a compulsive file stripper (leech & leave) kind of person... Rarely have time for all the nonsense...

Ask how many people stopped in for a file or two and got sucked in to the great topics (music-related or not). It's a great place, and I wouldn't probably have stuck around had I not been forced to see how cool the boards really were... So much so, in fact, that I wanted to be on the site staff.
Sure, we have to contend with some tras#p0sting ere and there, but it's a good trade, and it is working
We've got 19785 members now and were growing at a good rate.
Even comparing posting traffic now to the beginning of the year:
In January we had under 8000 posts and approx. 1600 new users
Last month we had 29420 posts and 1972 new users.
The 5 post rule has had it's place in getting where we are today.
Look around and you'll find a dozen threads on this subject, and you'll hear the same thing.

Most of the time it will be in the forum right away... Unless it is a post in the New File Forum, or an attachment in the Request forum. Those posts are moderated - meaning a staff member must approve them before they appear.

the one thing is, I can't think if a question to make even a first post worthwhile. Because there isn't a mountain of crap to sift through to find the answer to ANY question I've thought of yet.
Though I guess that just means you are doing a good job. :)

    hi, I'm new, and I made a post! wo0t!

As a new user I've read that you should stick around, but first impression is the boards seem so widely used, it would be hard to follow posts if you don't check back a few times a day. A lot of friendly and useful information around though. But as I've gathered, the 5-post rule is solely to try and attract re-peat users then??
But can this board make profits, or is it run for free?? I don;t know too much about this sort of stuff (or maybe not at all), but don't more users (i.e, even opportunist users), allow the web-site to attract more sponsors?

I'm a new midiaholic. This is my new hobby. I'm leaning on learning how to sequence midis because I'm actually getting to the point where I'd rather listen to midis than mp3 and wavs. Or I'll hear a song and wonder to myself what it would sound like in midi or how complex a midi would be... or should I compose it with or without a vocal track or.... now I'm just babbling but you get the idea this is great. Go midi
