Anyone have tips on recording string quartets? Record parts seperatly or together as an ensemble?
what sort of room type
any room type suggestions for accoustic instruments
As an ensemble. In fact, I doubt if the players, if they anything like good, would want it any other way, since the feed off each other while playing.
Don't get hung up on 'separation' - this sort of thing is self-balancing and it's the overal sound of the quartet you want and need.
You could use 2 mics one for viola/cello and the other for the violins but place high and above for the ambience and then mix them.
Separate names with a comma.
