Northeast Blackout 2003

Discussion in 'rec.music.percussion' started by George Lawrence, Aug 15, 2003.

  1. Everybody along the Hudson OK? I lost power at the shop and at home for most
of the late afternoon and most of the evening. We basically took the
anti-survivalist route and toughed it out at a restaurant and movie theatre
in a nearby area that had power :).

The latest in the blame game is that somewhere on Lake Erie in OH this all
started. I was only out of power for 10 minutes here in Waterville (near
Toledo). My friend up in Ann Arbor wasn't so lucky, he got stuck in an
elevator and had to climb his 280# ass up 4 flights on a service ladder!

Hear in Kingston, Ontario my power was out from 4:15pm to 11:30pm. Not too
bad. Ontario was hit hard with every where in Ontario except for like 1 or
2 towns were without power and still are. They say some places might not
get power for another day or two.

We have a water boil advisory, we can't shower, flush our toilets, and can't
use major appliances. We are to expect more outages today as the crews work
very hard to restore the grid. Speaking of grid right now it's very
unstable and weak in this part of the hemisphere,

Luckily I was already home. Not so lucky was I was working on a local
band's demo. I hadn't saved some of the work I did to it so it's all raw
again and I have to start all that work over again. Fun times...NOT

What sort of skins do you need to record drums? I understand there
are some with microphones built in, but how do these work?
Oh? I was told I had to buy recording heads for the drums - Lister

  5. Here in Newtown, CT we lost power 4-ish in the afternoon, and it has
not been restored yet. Unfortunately, power was never lost at my
office (about a half-hour away from home), so here I am. yipee!

It was fun though: Had a bar-b-que, then got my ass whomped in checkers by

Got home early today from work (Xerox). Lots of power spiking and controlled

Talked to my parents in Henrietta this morn and they're back too.

So how are things at Raaachester :)

Did they catch the robbers that shoot someone in Webster?

Where abouts in Rah-cha-cha are you? I checked out your webpage and
it looks VERY interesting. I don't have any edges to be done right
now, but do you do refinishing or lacquer finish repairs too? We
gotta hook up some time, I think I knew a Steve Nelson from
Irondequoit HS that had a cute little sister. That's not you, is it?
    ;-)

Let me know if you're playing out anywhere, even add me to your
mailing list. My band's real part-time, but we usually hit places
like the Brewhouse, Milestones, Karma, Millenium, etc.

Power is up and running in *most* towns, here, near the
Westchester/Putnam border. I was in-between students in Poughkeepsie at 4:15
when the power went out. I even gave my 4:30 lesson by sunlight in the
showroom of the music store. We then learned the power outage was one of
large scale and closed the store.
I headed home to grab some beers from the fridge before they got warm and
went to a friend's house to hang by the pool. Seems a lot of other people
had the same idea... And that's how Blackout Party 2003 came to be.
Unfortunately, I don't think the commuters in NYC were having blackout
parties. Being in a subway car WITH power can be uncomfortable. I couldn't
imagine getting stuck inside one during a blackout!

    Dealt lemons, made lemonade,
    CM
  11. They haven't caught the shooter yet. I'm not sure they will, as the person
had a good deal of time to get away before there was any response. I was in
the building next door to the credit union, where it happened. Basically,
when they announced a sitewide emergency on the PA, I stood up from my cube,
looked out the window, saw State Troopers, SWAT, dogs, Federal B. I., etc...
swarming all over the credit union. Then we all got locked in our buildings
for the next 11 hrs. It's been a long week...

  12. Hi,
I'm about 30 minutes south, down in the Finger Lakes region.

I do ply wrap recovering, domestic/exotic veneer finishes (should have some
snares in a few weeks), bearing edge repair, complete kit builds, custom
    snares (surprise!), etc...
As far as lacquer repairs, it really depends on the nature of the injury,
and the type of finish you currently have. I'm sure I could handle a
    complete kit strip-down and re-lacquering.
The website needs lots of attention. Stay tuned for pricing, color/finish
samples, payment options, and a pix gallery. Between summertime busy-ness
and equipping the shop, the website kind of got put on the back burner.

Nope, no little sister. Didn't go to Irondequoit High. Not me! :^)

We just started playing again, after having taken all of the last 12 months
off, due to my back injury (Ruptured/fragmented L4 disc that warranted
lumbar laminectomy surgery). We played the Park Ave Fest a few weeks ago
with a great Rochester born, NYC-based singer/songwriter named Dee Adams
(www.deeadams.com), as her regular band couldn't be in town. Big fun.
If you hit our band's website (www.bluejimmy.com) and go to the "Community"
link, you can sign up for our opt-in emailings. Showdates, band news,
    recipes, etc...

Anyhoo, to drag this one back on-topic, hopefully everyone will have the
juice pretty soon. Time for the U.S./Canada to upgrade their power grids! I
heard somewhere that in general, the equipment it runs on is WWI vintage?

Not me. No power out here, but I'm ready. Gas mask and assault
weapon loaded and ready to go right by the door. Anybody
coming for my flashlite batteries GETS IT! :)

Excuse me, but what the hell has happened to the America
I grew up in? The power goes off for a while and it totally
takes over the news for the evening on all channels? It's
called a "disaster" and a "crisis"? GIMME A BREAK HERE!
A while back a storm blew down my wires and because
I honestly told the power company that they dangling up
high and there was no danger they took a WEEK to fix them!
Last time I do that. Gosh, And I don't need to talk to any
psychologist to "help" me "through" it either!

It's the freaking POWER going off! If you aren't prepared to
make your own, then figure that you'll have to actually
sit there without "Friends" and "CSI" on the tube!
It might do you some good to meditate on how to be ready
for power outages in the future. How about a little
battery TV with a solar cell like I've got? Hmmm?

The talking heads on TV all go around trying to make a
huge emotional issue out of any minor thing. Cripes.
It RAINS and they have interviews with people blubbering
about "horrible strange tiny pieces of water falling from
the sky". Who ever saw THAT before? Scarey! When the weather
service says it might rain, all the local TV stations
take over the screen with giant "warnings" and "alerts"! For
freaking RAIN! Of course they never cover up paying commericals
with "alerts". And the power outage. New Yorkers ACTUALLY
being forced to use their FEET and walk!!! Who'd a thunk it?

I know it chokes me up. Oh The HUMANITY!!! All those
poor people totally helpless without their Internet
service! (sobs) I can't go on....

Someone please bring me a barf bag!

yea, from wall st. to westchester, after being stuck in an elevator

Before you start shooting your mouth off maybe you should realize that no
power means no water. Kind of a large problem.

A battery powered UPS is your friend in need. Even a small one will keep the
system up long enough to save everything and do an orderly shutdown. If you
use a laptop you can run for days off a UPS.

I was in Rockland too at the time - power came back on in Orangeburg
around 8:30pm Thursday night. I had to head in to work at WNYC radio
the next morning at 5am. We were moved into Sirius Satellite Radio's
studios on 49th St. because our studios downtown were dead, and Sirius
had generators. Full power came back to Sirius around 6:30am Friday.
We didn't get the juice back downtown until 9:41 Friday night, right
at the end. I'm back at work now (Sunday 10am) and the
    troubleshooting continues...
