Federal had a division that made arc transmitters for marine applications.
When tubes came in, they started making big transmitters for marine
communication work. Then later on they got into the broadcast industry.

These things were voice processing devices for AM broadcast applications,
back in the pre-SSB days. Slow gainriding AGC device, followed by a peak
limiter to bring average voice levels up.

I have one and like it on electric bass.
I was once pleasantly surprise when I tried it on a vocal.
