I first heard this in a bookstore at an airport (Dallas?) and
was just struck dumb by how much he put into those
(somewhat clumsy) lyrics. I saw the video for the first time a
couple days ago, and it's a hard one to shake.

When you're a truly great artist you make the song, when you suck the song
makes you. I'm not a huge JR Cash fan but he made that song. It's
downright scary with him singing it.

It is. He takes the song from creepy to just devastating.

Show that video to a depressed person and leave them alone with a bottle of
    pills.

Yup. They were playing it every night @ 11:00 PM CST on
    CMTV for a while.

That video is up for an MTV video award.

I always liked the song. Cash adds more to it than Reznor could ever
muster on vocals, but I liked the song from the start. I'd like to know the
back story, did Cash just hear the song and think "I should cover that..."
    or what?

I dunno. I think Rick Rubin (who produced all the "American
Recording" albums) selects a few oddball tunes for Cash.
He's covered Beck, Nick Cave and Sting, among others.

I'd go out and buy the CD but I don't think I need another
recording of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" or "Danny Boy."
Maybe I'll just buy an MP3 of the song somewhere.

Rick Rubin picked it for him.

I'd like to hear him cover "Release the Bats."

Or "Yummy Yummy I've Got Love in My Tummy".

    Not really.
Johnny's a great one. More people should listen to more Johnny Cash.
