I am a digital musician and I own legal copies of both Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and the newer Cakewalk Sonar XL 2.0. I have been using Pro Audio 9 since 1998 and use it everyday so I have an advanced knowledge of the software. I recently downloaded and installed Pro Tools Free, which is avalible free of charge from the digidesign corporate web page (www.digidesign.com), and after much consideration have decided that there are no real advantages to Pro Tools over Cakewalk as a MIDI editor. Now as a master program I think it is accually better than Cakewalk, because of its advanced mastering features, but Red Roaster (www.sekd.com) offers a more comprehensive solution which I like even better. So when it comes down to it I really think that it is personal preferance.

"Any way at all to run Pro Tools Free on XP? I have a friend who has a Mac and he sold me on how great it is..."

Protools Free for PC is crap. Generally Protools for PC is crap. If you have a PC, use Nuendeo/Cubase/Sonar/etc. Protools on PC is inferior to all of those. Especially when it comes to midi.

there is no PT free for win XP or MAC OS X (there souldnt protools for windows peroid, i hope they take a note out of logics book) if u want it on either of those sytems, get an mbox!!! for mac users, if does NOT run out of classic, you ahve to back to 9, but 9 is awsome for audio anyway

In terms of MIDI, at least on the Mac, Digital Performer has always had a slight edge over ProTools. However, ProTools is certainly the industry stanard in professional studios for digital recording. It's MIDI funtions are strong, but take the back seat slightly.

I would go for Digital Performer for midi - Ive used it since they had us using at berklee. althought its only for mac. Pro tools is more for audio and doesn't have all the midi capabilites that DP has

Anyone know about Logic or Cubase? i know they might be for pc
