:stick: Thru the years I have found that songwriters tend to write songs one way or the other. They usually don't do it both ways. Some prefer to start with Lyrics first, and others start with a good piece of music.

I was wondering how songwriters here get started.

Me? I've actually done it both ways... and have had success both ways

Both ways here.... I usually have lick of music or a few lyrics set to music in my head and then fill in between both lyrically and musically..... composing as I go.... then, if I'm lucky, I actually get it into the computer or down on paper before it leaves my conciousness!

You have to have some idea of what the music that goes with your lyrics is going to sound like, but basically I write the lyrics first, and then they get altered to fit the music.

As jeaniesing said you just need a lick or two in your head and your good to go.

Yeah... if I have a pattern it is I usually start with Lyrics because I like to write poetry... but then when I hear some happenin' music, or write a cool riff, I'll reshape the lyrics to fit the music.

So I'd have to say I do that more... but not exclusively

I usually write a basic lick or progression, then the words come then i generally re-write the music around it

I think you just make the melodie, and then the lyrics. Because you can have an sad melodie, and then you can make sad lyrics as an example.

    I do it both ways...
Sometimes I'll have Lyrics, and want a song to match...I make better ones that way....

Yet sometimes, I'll be playing my guitar in my room, or listening to my mates play, when suddenly I think..WHOA! Cool! Then we try and make a song to match that...Them ones often have more music playing, I like them that way...

    My Lyrics always suck!!..

but If I write Music first I can sometimes get some lyrics happeneing.....
If someone gives me Lyrics I can usually write somthing that will work with it.

it depends which idea comes first... i normally get the lyrics first, and at the same time try to make some kind of rythm to work on.

I rarely include lyrics with my writing, but when I do...I usually create the music first.

every lyric i've written has absolutely no melody..i suck at that..i'll prolly get to it when i have the time after exams..

only once i wrote lyrics to melody when i took part in Jeanie's lyric contest where i wrote a parody to an existing song..

if you were to write your own song. u would have to have a concept of what kind of music you're writing. if it's a like a break up song. u kno for a fact that u would have to have a slow beat or something. or maybe something that's about drugs, gurrls, dubs, and stuff .. then there u would compose some rap beat. but in my opinion. it's easier to come up w/ lyrics then write a song then change the way you write it a bit just to fit it in the song
