I am using an Creative Live card and the onboard synth. Is there a way to get better sound quality from my MIDI files ? I have seen posts about different ways and SW synths, but would anyone recommend that I do something different ?
    Thanks

SoundFont is all I use. If you are listening to MIDI files for pleasure, SoundFont technology is as far as you may go. It is free, after all. Download and load GeneralUser GS and have a go. If you have any questions, let me know.

For the most part, the drums, strings, synth, keys sound good, but the guitar (and of course, melody) sound awful. is there options to make the guitar sound better or is that just something to deal with in MIDI. I usually just mute the guitar track and I think it sounds much better.

    Thanks again :)

Frank Wen's Fluid SoundFont (140MB) is the highest quality available for free, which can be downloaded from a link on his homepage. Megafont must be installed to load more than 32MB of SoundFont cache, and can be downloaded here.

Recommended GM SoundFont banks in order of size:
    GeneralUser GS v1.35
    Unison 24MB
    sYnerGi 200LE*
    Reality
    Utopia Live*
    Cadenza
    sYnerGi GS*
    Hubbe 64
    Magic SF
    Melting Pot
    All In One
    Real Font
    ZX128 XR5
    SGM128 v1.20
    Crisis v1.8 250 MB

    *Must be purchased

If you need any GM patches custom compiled or have more questions, you can contact me here, or through the e-mail link located at the bottom of my posts.

Also, be sure you have the Proper SoundFont device selected and matched with the synth bay in which you loaded the bank.

Thanks Zandro for those interesting links

Recently I got my first Soundblaster product, the USB Audigy2, mainly to experiment with the soundfont stuff and to do some recording - stunning sound quality! I've been using Roland SoundCanvas for so many years, and now exploring more into the soundfont and VST.

Good to know we have a guru here

I felt kinda foolish when I asked about sond fonts before I looked it all up. Will try it. Like external sound modules for midi, and will use virtual or soft synths when I can't use the external sound modules. Look up more stuff on Sond Fonts in the forum, as I beleive people are offering different banks(?).

I have been constructing my own GM/GS bank for a few months by resampling and tine-tuning samples collected from other banks... It should be ready by the end of the year, and will equal about 96MB in size. If some of the samples were not copyrighted, I would host it as the MIDIBuddy Bank and it would be purchaseable here. It is currently called ITT Master/ZSF, and will only be in my personal possession. I hate unofficial copyrights.

hi,just notice you sgm128 v1.21 gm sf has been released, please visit:
    http://www.geocities.co.jp/CollegeLife-Library/5084/index.html
this sf plays GM & GS midis well. Most samples were taken
from roland software & hardware(xv5050)synths myself,
so the sounds are quite different compare to other free banks
    hope you like it.

    some mp3 demos here:

to Zandro:sorry I still dunno know why you said my last post is a "advertisement" and "was a violation of the Terms Of Use"
I made this sf for fun & I never use it to make money.
just share my works with other sf users.
If I "violation of the Terms Of Use" again, please feel free to remove my post.
    sorry

Starion: Sorry, I have no clue. I have never had to use the program because I own an Audigy card.

pkshan: This one I will let slide because it is relative to our discussion.

Hmm.. Soundfonts.. its like crack, as you can get addicted very quickly!

I must say, a high quality Soundfont loaded into a Live! or Audigy card sounds dang good when played "live" with a MIDI keyboard..

Thanks for the list of recommended fonts. I'll be sure and try to find them!
