who do think is the best song writer ever from any era and -maybe why.
mines is john lennon because his lyrics have a deep meaning and most of his songs can be remembered due to his use of melodic chords

Can't choose one only, but here are some songwriters I admire:

Mary Chapin Carpenter (astoundingly poetic and heartfelt lyrics)

Stevland Morris (AKA Stevie Wonder) (Has written some truly classic songs, and made far more of a contribution to modern music than the masses realise or appreciate. Wonderful melodies, too.)

Neil Diamond (same comments as above)

Prince (a truly extraordinary range of musical styles is encompassed by his body of work, and with remarkable authority over them.)

Benny Anderson & Bjorn Ulvaeus. (Who, whether they like them or not, can truly deny the massive contribution ABBA made to popular music?? This is pop #defined#)

Lennon & McCartney (a great song writing duo, the latter of which is often unfairly maligned in favour of Lennon. BOTH of them have made some of the biggest ever contributions to popular music, and it is notable that neither (IMHO) was as good a writer when solo as they were when in partnership. Catchy, populist lyrics, married to incredibly accessible melodies which stand the test of time)

There are more I could mention, but I'll leave that to someone else!

"Music was my first love, and it will be my last - music of the future, and music of the past. To live without my music would be impossible to do, 'cos in this world of trouble, my music pulls me through..."

    Too right.

    Phil.

Perhaps stating the obvious, but Irving Berlin had a few catchy tunes strewn about. Quite an art to putting together just the right words...

One of my favorites in Australia is Paul Kelly. Now that man really knows how to tell a story in a song. And make it easy on the ear as well!

Hrm, perhaps straying from the topic, but since others have mentioned songwriters of note, I'd like to add that I find Loreena McKennitt's songs quite pleasing (though she could also arguably be called an arranger, having so many traditional songs and poetry realizations in repertory).

Just visited Loreena's web site (http://www.quinlanroad.com/), and was surprised it was one of the most internationally friendly artist sites I've seen - having a dozen languages available for browsing other than English.
