Stilcrazy brought up a good point...
    Where do we start?

Maybe we should start by asking a few questions to define ourselves. This could be the discussion that boils down into a business mission.

Shall we start by blueprinting the organization a bit?:

    What are we now?
What do we hope to become soon?
What do we hope to eventually end up being?

Right now, I'd say we're just a bunch of music enthusiasts (did I spell that right?) who enjoy listening to, and creating, MIDI files of our favorite songs...for use in our cell phones, profiles, and on sites that allow the use of MIDI's..to spruce up our webpages, eh? I personally know that I use them in conjunction with my program, Harmony Assistant, so I can learn these songs on the bass...cause it's fun...;)

On the following points, I know I can't speak for everyone..so ya'll will have to speak up for ya'll selves...(damn those southern influences)...

I, personally, hope to just gain a little recognition for my sequencing ability I suppose...I never really thought about it. I mean, I love music, and love being able to bring it to other people, in whatever form, when possible...

The thought has crossed my mind of being a pro sequencer...at least once. I mean, I'm not out to screw with copyrights and all that stuff...but dammit, people deserve to hear music too. I mean, I want to be a pro musician myself anyway...so I don't want to leech away, only to become one of the leeched upon one day ;)

Right now, we all, I guess, sequence stuff that we like. I know I've been on this mission to sequence all of Meteora, because I like it, and it's highly requested. After seeing the success of "Don't Stay" and "Figure.09", I have the motivation to finish the rest of the album.

Eventually, I'd like to do alot more rock songs. Taproot's "Poem" is on my list of tracks to do..as are alot of Tool songs I feel people ought to hear...because heavy-metal/rock is..well, rockin' :p

Depending on the success of the group/our actions...I like(d) the idea of possibly making some money out of this...I mean...maybe we can't replace Hittrax or w/e..but maybe add to it? I mean, if people really want MIDI's..they'll find a way to get them...;)

    *whew*

At this stage we are an Idea....

THe Next stage should be establishing everyones sequnecing strengths and weaknesses..

I thnk we then need to setup a test project...somthing not too complex to try and work with some sort of procedures etc to do with version tracking, who has what file and what stage it's at.

Once that has happened and we have ironed out the inevitable bugs, we can move forward from there.

Where is it going to go?? who knows...if we eventually want to start charging for this stuff we will have to investigate Copyright issues for a start.

    then setting a fair rate........

For Now I think we should keep it FOC. It doesn't take alot to wrok out what is popular ...just have a look @ the request forum and see which ones haven't been filled...

that's all I have for now.....

I am definitely viewing this as a business idea, i.e - lets see if we can make some money

What are we now? - a newborn idea
What do we hope to become soon? - a business
What do we hope to eventually end up being? a very profitable business

What do we do now? - get a list songs that we have already sequenced/halfsequenced together to start building our songlist

What will we hope to eventually do? take over the world...I mean, build an excellent list of midis and keep adding to it

What will be end up doing? selling proffessionally sequenced midis from our list and also custom make midis

questions- do we sequence files together, or should we work on our own files?

Im all for a test project but what if the song we choose isnt in the genre that ALL sequencers like e.g - Joz is keen on Linkin Park etc. so the enthusiasm is there for him to sequence that style. If it is decided we sequence a hiphop song I dont think he'll be keen to do it and this could start to feel like a job, ya know what Im sayin?

maybe its best if we sequence our own songs( no pressure that way, work at your own pace) unless 2 or more sequencers AGREE that they want to do the same song........

my sequencing strengths - drums and bass

style - usually guitar oriented songs, pop/rock type stuff that ppl can dance to

Should there be a thread or forum to post our files ?
I've started work on a Coldplay track which will probably need to be touched up by someone a bit further down the sequencing road than me. Any ideas ?

Here is what I Propose we Do.

For Each New Track, The Lead Sequencer will start a thread in this Forum.

Title and Artist in the SUbject (Of Course)

Anyone interested in asisting with that file can post their Interest in that thread.

Version Tracking:- This is Crucial as you don't want 2 ppl working in the file @ the same time....just means more work for everyone.
Solve this by using the following naming convention
Title - Artist-mmddyy-x.mid where x is the edit number for that day...........

If you are working on the file...make a post that you are working using which ever version you are using and when finished with it, post the file with the updated version number.

    How's that sound.

My Strengths : Bass, Piano/Keys/Pads/Strings/Brass - Dynamics etc..

Well, see, it's not just Linkin Park. I'm into alot of rock/metal/"numetal"/hard rock stuff...I mean, I'm not saying I surely won't do a different genre, but it might take a little prodding to get it done ;)

I mean, I see so many people requesting damn pop/hip hop MIDI's anyway...so I'm sure alot of other people will have time to fill those. Me? I hope to fill the large Rock void that exists..;)

I do agree with the test idea...but I kinda like VOG's idea that we should do our own...I mean..if I'm your "rock MIDI" guy, or whatever, I should put up a blistering rock MIDI for you guys to hear...or you could just go hear my version of Don't Stay and be done with it, but where's the fun in that?

I downloaded one of your LP midis Joz, It sounded excellent:thumbsup: You are definitely our ROCKMIDI guy

Maybe you could keep doing what your doing on the rock scene and if a TEAMmidi pops up that you are interested in you could add a track to it if you felt the need.

Dave - Good ideas, about starting the thread and keeping each version numbered. Communication is very important on this. If you are going to work on a track, you definitely have to post in the thread and let ppl know what you're doing so we dont have 2 sequenceres doing exactly the same track

I thought we could add a naming code after the artist and title

    D = Drums, B=Bass, G=Guitar, K= Keyboards, M=Melody etc
if theres more than one guitar or keyboard etc. than its - G2 or K2

So a file with 2 guitars Drms Bass Keybord will look like this

    Artist-Title-D,B,G2,K-5

the 5 = the edit number of the song like Dave said, the letters will make it even clearer in case u forget or put the wrong edit number

maybe this is too indepth though, maybe all we need to do is post in the thread - I have added a guitar or whatever

Looks like we need a guitar specialist, someone who's good at Guitar Pro or Tabit(or whatever its called) - GnR was good at that, maybe someone else will show up.

Wow, thanks...to think I'm just starting out too...

Not to down the idea, but do we really need to be that indepth? I mean, couldn't we just tell what was in the file by opening it? *shrug* An artist, title, and maybe the edit number...I guess...would be ok. And if you edit it, just post what you changed. That way we don't have to strain our brains remembering what G3-K4 (You sunk my battleship!) means...and can focus on creating more MIDIS?

Of course, these are just my two cents....

    Joz,
Yup I agree........Just post the changes.........
and I guess the other thing to keep in mind is we all use different software, so Only save and post in .MID type 0 or 1

    no Proprietry File types!!!!

Yeah..Harmony only lets me save as 0 or 1...I usually use 1...so if someone needs me to save a work in both 1 and 0 for some reason, lemme know in advance..if that's ok...

That's a damn good idea Pol... I'd love to - but I'm waiting to add anything else until John comes back and I can talk to him about the SQL database, and what we can do to keep it from having a heart attack every 10 minutes... Since I've added the Private Forum and New User Group, it's been doing a little bit worse. I'm going to try to talk him into getting rid of a few forums to lighten things up a little.

I will keep this in mind though; I like the idea :D

Would we upload sheet music here? Is that possible? I have a program that makes sheet music out of any MIDI file..so..you could all see your files in standard notation, if you wanted

    So When Do We Start?

Well, this may seem to be jumping the gun, but...when do we start? How much more info is needed? Any decisions going to be made soon?

Folks, I took the liberty of getting this info from Toplist Team where I buy some of my midis. This is what they say about copyright and sequencing for them. etc. Have a quick read, it's quite interesting.

DO I HAVE TO BE INVITED TO JOIN TOPLIST?
No! Anyone who is willing to contribute to the team is very welcome to join. So if you are interested, please read on...

    WHO IS IN THE TEAM?

Our team is mainly people who have a professional job unrelated to MIDI, and treat MIDI as a hobby. There are also a few professional musicians who use the catalogue of Toplist MIDIs and MP3s for their own performances. We all communicate with a mailing list.

    IS TOPLIST LEGAL?

Yes! The website is fully licensed to publish MIDI files, and very soon MP3 backing tracks. Unfortunately this is the reason we have to charge for our files, but it means that you don't have to worry about your site being shut down.

WHO GETS THE RIGHTS TO MY SONGS?

The rights stay with the person who made the song! You can choose to publish your songs with whoever you like - Toplist won't try and stop you. However we prefer to keep our files exclusive to our site :)

WHAT HAPPENS IF I LEAVE THE TEAM?

Then Toplist will remove all your songs from the website, and wish you well.

HOW CAN I EARN MONEY WITH TOPLIST?

You can quickly start to make money by selling your MIDI files via SingLouder.com. You are entitled to 50% of the profits made by your files. There is also the possibility of bonuses for producing in-demand Top10 hits.

HOW MANY MIDIS DO I HAVE TO MAKE A WEEK? I DON'T HAVE MUCH TIME...

We don't force members of the team to make any songs to stay in the team. You can choose which song you want to make, when you want to make it. We want to try and keep everything fun, without pressure. However, you won't be allowed access to the Toplist catalogue until you make a few contributions of Top40 MIDIs.

    SOUNDS GOOD, WHAT NOW?

Send us an example of your Top40 MIDIs to info@toplist-team.com. We will have a listen and then email you the contract that you must sign to join the team. While all that is going on, we will add you to the website and introduce you to the rest of the team :)

    WHAT DOES THE CONTRACT SAY?

    It is actually very simple:
You give Toplist permission to publish your songs for you
You will not send us files made by somebody else (for example another MIDI company) - this is ILLEGAL, and you could suffer the consequences.
You keep all the rights for your songs
You are entitled to 50% of the profits Toplist makes from our visitors downloading your songs.

So, first thing I see is that they have purchased a license to produce the midi files and publish them. I've no idea what that would cost but I'm sure it's not cheap. I think we are on a loser if we want to make midis and sell them ourselves but perhaps if we sequence some files we can join a company like this and then share out profits/access to their midis. It's certaintly what i think we could do. Any thoughts?

I thought the idea was for this organization/guild to become a Pro Site on our own...I mean, I'm not totally against this idea...I mean, to be honest, if there's any money to be made...the less hassle the better

    Though I don't know about the Top40 MIDI thing...I can't stand most of what's on the top 40, cause it's shit....but that's another story..

I'd like to see some more action from the rest of the guild...where are you guys/gals?

Joz, all I'm saying is that to set up our own pro site will require a license and that I'm sure will be expensive andf I'm guessing in the thousands of pounds. Yeah we could do it illegally but I wouldn't be interested. It was just an idea to sell them to other pro sites.
