I use XP. Although I still kinda miss 98.
XP is definitely more stable but I can't play most of my games on it and there are things that are way different and in a bad way. But at least i don't have to reboot my computer several times a day.

XP or 2003 are the best in my opinion. 2000 isn't too bad either.

I use Win98SE and WIn 2000 and both are stable unlike XP with its lack of drivers and bugs fixes and the odd navigation to files

What about linux, it may not have the same driver coverage as MS but it's alot more stable.

Linux has REAL plug-and-play technology. Windows is so pathetic, you have to restart to use some plug-and-play devices. "You have right-clicked. Windows must be restarted for the changes to take effect."

I've only used 98SE and XP Pro but out of the 2 i have to say XP is definately the better. I don't play games so i am not sure what it is like for gaming but for overall stability i would have to say XP.

It depends on what you want to do!

Windows 95/98/ME: Good for older slower computers. Good for playing older DOS based games.

Bad for stability. Bad for support of new hardware.

Windows 2000: Good for stability. Good support on all most all hardware.

Bad for older games. Bad for people who don't know much about computers.

Windows XP: Good for support of modern hardware and software. Good for people who don't know much about computers.

Bad for being slow and bloated with extra Microsoft propoganda. Bad for Product Activation

XP pro gets my vote..even if you are using older software, you can run that game or program in the best mode for it. XP makes the program think it;s running in 98 or 2000....

...But not in DOS. An independent shell version is required for the older DOS apps, but many still are not emulated properly.

True. I've pretty much given up on having one machine to run everything. So I built a Pentium DOS 6.22 box for the good oldies. ;)

Mostly, public Windows OSes are crap.

Microsoft tends to make all Windows that are sold more to the general public (Home Computers), they tend to be very much flawed, maybe be accident, maybe on purpose. ( like this )

The versions made more for professionals (administrators and servers), tend to be much more stable.

I should know, my Windows ME tends to crash once a day, at LEAST.
