Blood patching is the treatment for "spinal headache" after CSF
    has been withdrawn.

In the Google search field, type the following, complete with
    quotes: "blood patch" epidural
This produces hits such as the following:

    Cool link.

What I'm wondering is why Jack had to undergo a lumbar
    puncture in the first place.

Lumbar puncture is indicated for analysis of CSF for either
diagnostic purposes (such as for meningitis, bleeding around the
brain, tumors of the brain or spinal cord, etc..) - or to deliver
antibiotics or analgesics (epidural during labor and delivery).

There's nothing in the medical literature that I could find
which establishes medical necessity for this procedure for a patient
    suffering with disc herniations.

It was for a myelogram. They inserted contrast material into my spine for
imaging purposes. Images were great. Results were not so great -
Particularly since I fell into the 1% who experience spinal fluid leakage...
